Digital Essence - search engine optimisation

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of improving traffic to a web site from search engines and other sites and blogs. The higher a sites 'Page Rank', the higher in the search results it will appear, and the greater the chance of it being clicked on by a prospective customer.

Studies have shown that very few read beyond the 5th or 6th search results. This is usually because only the first 5 or 6 are visible without scrolling. If your site doesn't rank well, you might as well be invisible.

The process of website search engine optimisation primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to improve its relevance to specific keywords and improving the indexing by search engine 'robots'.

Search engine results are split into two distinct sections, 'organic' and 'paid search'. Organic is just a fancy term for normal search results, while paid search are the links you see at the top and sides and are part of Search Engines Pay Per Click (PPC) programmes.

Pay Per Click is a process whereby clicks are purchased for a fixed price based upon the popularity of a keyword. Websites that utilise PPC will display an advertisement when a keyword query matches an advertisers keyword list. You may have seen these on sites such as Ebay, Google, Yahoo and many blogs.

Advertising using PPC allows you to set a maximum daily, weekly or monthly budgets, which can be as little or as much as you want, and you only pay when a visitor actually clicks on your advert and visits your site.
